This summer teamSmith players did a
tremendous job on and off the field.
Although we did not qualify for
Nationals, our players represented
themselves as true champions. A
highlight of the summer was working
the Harlem RBI clinic giving back to
the game we respect so much. There
were many people who complimented
our TEAM on their character,
leadership and how they played the
game. No score will ever touch that.
Those are special memories that will
always stay with us.
All of our Seniors (08's) are off to
their respective colleges in a few
weeks, carrying the teamSmith
philosophy with them. We couldn't be
more proud of them.
Paige Smith- signed with St.
Francis; Jessica Richards signed
with Fordham University; Alli Taylor
signed with UC Santa Barbara; Danee
Collett signed with Penn State;
Mackensey Carter signed with
Georgetown; "DD" Burns signed to
Syracuse- she also is part of the
ROTC program; Kendall Gorham signed
with Cal Baptist University. All
these players did a great job all
the way around. Their work ethic and
desire for the game will carry with
them to the next level and their
futures are extremely bright.
A special congrats to our (09's)
that have verballed. Nalani St.
Germaine verballed to Long Beach
State; Chelsey Anderson verballed to
Cal State Fullerton; Kailyn Johnson
verballed to Penn State. We are
proud of everyones achievements and
are looking forward to great things
from this group in the upcoming
teamSmith season.
TeamSmith Kickoff
As the 2008 school year winds to a close,
Teamsmith gears up for a summer of hard work
and great softball. The break for high
school softball has proven successful for
many of the Teamsmith players. Alli Taylor
(El Modena, Div. II) and Paige Smith
(Valencia, Div I.) both helped their schools
win CIF titles. Through challenges and
triumphs in high school, our team has grown
and changed. Senior Brittney Hubbard, headed
to University of Georgia next year, added to
this by saying “we've all grown individually
stronger both physically and mentally thus
making us stronger as a unit, as a team.”
This summer is going to be filled with
physical challenges and unforgettable
memories.
These next few months will include tough practices and
workouts, showcase tournaments, and national
qualifiers. Our goal is to not only qualify
for nationals but to also compete once we
are there; we are on a mission. We will get
there by supporting each other and working
hard every day. “The mission that we have
for this summer can be accomplished because
we are all working hard to get there,” said
junior pitcher Chelsey Anderson. This
attitude is seen across the board throughout
the Teamsmith organization.
Teamsmith has exciting events ahead, such as the annual New
York trip. Senior Jessica Richards, headed
to New York next year to attend Fordham
University, is excited along with the our
whole team to go “play in the New Jersey
classic and then our whole New York trip
after: Harlem clinic, shopping on Canal
Street, and Yankee game.” These memorable
events will not only bring us closer as a
team but, like sophomore Jenna Stark
commented on the chemistry of the team, all
of these memories make us “much more than a
team we are a family.”
So as we start this summer, let’s make it a successful,
challenging, and unforgettable one!!

Today,
we spotlight pitcher Mackensey Carter of
Mission Viejo (Calif.) High and Team Smith
as she talks about her Georgetown Univ.
verbal and more, including how close she
came to quitting softball...
StudentSportsSoftball.com: How did
your high school and club seasons go this
year... Do you have any stats or key
accomplishments you can provide?
Mackensey Carter: Mission Viejo High
School had an amazing with a record of 22-6.
For the first time in 20 years we went to
CIF and won the South Coast League. We also
won the Laguna Hills Tournament and got
third place in the Woodbridge Tournament. My
pitching record was 11-1 and I was voted
Co-MVP of South Coast League with our other
pitcher Michelle Tait. I was also Co-MVP for
Mission Viejo High School. I got First Team
All-League and Scholar Athlete.
My club team did very well and grew as a
team. We got better every time we stepped
onto the field and we worked harder than
most teams out there. We are always
competitive and fight until the last out of
every game. We also grew close through an
amazing opportunity of going to New York and
putting on a softball clinic for kids in
Harlem.
SSS.com: Talk about committing...
When did you do it and how (phone, in
person, on a campus visit?)
MC: I committed when I was on my
official visit to Georgetown in early
September. I had a great time with the
coaches, Pat Conlan and Lauren May, and the
girls. It was an awesome experience.
SSS.com: How did your school first
discover you and eventually offer?
MC: Pat Conlan had seen me at a
couple showcase tournaments, including the
Team New Jersey Showcase. She contacted me
and told me she was very interested. We
continued to talk and we set up an official
visit.
SSS.com: Describe the moment when you
first realized you wanted to go to that
university...
MC: See this is a tough question
because I always knew deep down that I
wanted to go to Georgetown, but I guess I
realized for sure right when I stepped onto
the campus. I know that Georgetown is the
right place for me. I can't even describe it
but when you get that feeling, you know for
sure.
SSS.com: What's been your best or
most rewarding experience on the field?
MC: My most rewarding experience was
teaching the clinic in Harlem. The kids
there were so open and willing to listen to
everything I said. They wanted to know all
they could about our sport and they enjoyed
playing the game because it is fun. They
taught me a lot even though teaching was my
job. I will never forget my experience with
those amazing kids.
SSS.com: How about in life?
MC: My most rewarding experience in
life has been supporting my friend who has
had many tough life experiences with her
family. It has been rewarding to know that I
have helped her get through many hard trials
with prayer and just a friend to lean on.
SSS.com: Tell us about
adversity you've had to overcome...
MC: I have had to overcome injuries
due to many years of pitching, but I have
also had to go through internal adversity. A
few years ago I contemplated quitting
pitching and softball altogether, but then
realized how much of an impact it has had on
my life and how much I have yet to learn.
SSS.com: If you weren't dedicating
your talents and time to softball, what
would you be doing?
MC: I would be volunteering more of
my time to my church. I would also want to
take a photography class, because I really
enjoy taking pictures.
SSS.com: Off the field, fill in the
blanks of these sentences...
MC: "If I had one superpower it'd
be.... to be able to teleport myself."
MC: "Something few, if anyone, knows
about me is.... that I love writing and
reading poetry."
MC: "Besides a family member, if I
had to list a hero or idol it'd be...one of
my best friends Kaitlyn because of her
selflessness."
MC: "You couldn't PAY me enough
to...go skydiving"
MC: "Give me a million dollars and
I'll spend it on... well in all seriousness
I probably wouldn't spend it. I would
probably just save it."
MC: "The most happy I've ever been
was... when I became an aunt or being in
both of my brother's wedding. But also up
there is when I verbaled to the best school
ever, Georgetown!"
MC: "The best thing about softball
is... the competitiveness it brings out in
me and the determination I see in me when I
play it."
